Agia Varvara Church

Salamiou

The blessing of Saint Barbara was shown with a miracle, during the construction.

The blessing of Saint Barbara was shown with a miracle, during the construction. A woman named Maria, while carrying building materials and had climbed wooden scaffolding at the dome, she fell from such a high height, but the Saint saved her and she was safe and sound.

The foundation stone was laid in 1902. The stone craftsmen from Kaimakli, Christofi and Nikolis undertook the construction of this grandiose building, after they had built Agia Varvara Kaimakli in the same style. The work is erected without concrete and iron. The old Salamiotes wearing a "vraka" embraced the work and carried stones with the donkeys, from the region of Trachouri, to Mount Paoura, for the exterior masonry, while for the interior masonry, stones from Mount Lakria. The Salamiotisses women were carrying water with the "stamnia" (pitcher) from Gerovrisi, in the jars that had been placed for the needs of the sacred building.
