Agios Georgios Church Kaallepia

Kallepia

The main church of the village

It is located in the heart of the village and it is spacious. The existing church was built around the middle of the 20th century. As one of the oldest inhabitants of the village, Dimitris Sofroniou, says, the inhabitants of the village, watching the community grow, decided to build a new larger church in 1915. It took fifteen years to construct the church; specifically, it was completed in 1930. Thirteen years later, in 1943, the church collapsed, except for the side walls. According to Sofroniou, this was due to the poor craftsmanship and mistakes of the engineers. The villagers were deeply hurt. The feelings of the villagers are reflected in the words of Sofroniou: "so much effort, so much money and 500 souls were crying and wailing over the ruins". In 1955, the reconstruction of the church began, to which a significant contribution was made by Archbishop Makarios III, the inhabitants of the village and many others who love our village.
