The valley of the Vasilikos river
40 km from the city of Larnaca, off the main Nicosia-Limassol highway, Kalavasos is built upon the west bank of the Vasilikos river, at an average altitude of 80 meters. The valley of the Vasilikos river and the entire surrounding area must have been wooded and verdant in previous eras, a fact that is also provided – according to the prevailing interpretation – the name of the village. From the ancient Greek word “vassa”, which means woody valley, came the name of the community. Strolling around the village, you realise its rich historical background by encountering its archaeological sites, including the well-known Neolithic settlement of “Tenta” and by hearing stories for the mine works. The central church of the village, which is dedicated to Panagia Theotokos, is built in the center of the village among the traditional houses. The church was built around 1910 and it is cruciform. The visitor has the benefit of the daily hands-on experience of the rich traditions of village people and especially the authentic tastes of traditional cuisine, filtered through the sense of genuine hospitality. The restored lodgings create a warm atmosphere that will be engraved deep in your memory.
